From 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Saturday, April 8, the Bellaire Branch of AYLUS volunteered at Books for Development (3709 Polk St, Houston, TX, 77003).
Books for Development is a non-profit organization that gathers and re-distributes donated books that might otherwise be dumped in a landfill. The organization relies on volunteers to help sort and ship their books to libraries and schools in developing countries. First initiated in 2009 and established in 2013, Books for Development helps address the book famine in developing countries like Uganda, Kenya, Malawi, and Belize.
The organization has built over 200 school libraries, several mobile libraries, and 25 community/district libraries, serving over 4 million residents. Books for Development also makes local book deliveries to the homeless, schools, jails, Spanish-speaking children, and disadvantaged children during the holidays.
Six AYLUS volunteers helped sort books by genre and packaged books into boxes for shipment at the Books for Development warehouse.
The following volunteers participated in this event (3 hours): Olivia Bui, Isabella Ong, Daniel Chan, Jason Deng, Helena Wang; Adam Zhou (2 hours).
