On February 4th, the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza hosted a Chinese New Year celebration show that lasted from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. To ensure its sucess, members of AYLUS San Fernando Valley helped to oversee the management of a specific group, the “Safe Passage” — a group of underpriveleged Latino families who were invited to watch the show. From 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., members Jason Xie, Benjamin Kozikaro-Sanchez, David Wan, Jerry Jin, and Subhash Srinivasa helped manage the Safe Passage and general audiences at the show.
- During set-up (5:30 – 6:30), members set up at the entrance of the event to help the Safe Passage families locate them — preparing a table as well as small gifts such as Lucky Knots and Red Packets.
- As people entered (6:30 – 7:10), members split into teams of clerks — manning the entrance table and distributing tickets and small gifts to fourty-five Safe Passage individuals — as well as tour guides — showing them to exhibits such as lion heads, Beijing opera costumes, etc. and aiding in picture taking.
- Throughout the show (7:10 – 9:00), members aided in translating into Spanish when needed to ensure Safe Passage families had an enjoyable experience. After the show, members bid the audience farewell and helped clean up.
Overall, both members and audience had a very enjoyable and successful experience, and we look forward to future cooperations with the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza at events.
