Greater Princeton AYLUS Volunteers at a Lantern Festival Event in New Jersey on February 3rd, 2023

On February 3rd, the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) volunteered at a Lantern Festival Event hosted in North Jersey. 

The Lantern Festival (2023 date: February 5th), also called Shangyuan Festival or Yuan Xiao Festival, is a Chinese traditional festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunisolar Chinese calendar, during the full moon. The Lantern Festival is a holiday celebrated in China and other Asian countries that honors deceased ancestors and aims to promote reconciliation, peace, and forgiveness.

On the night of the Lantern Festival, streets are decorated with colorful lanterns, often with riddles written on them. People eat sweet rice balls called tangyuan, watch dragon and lion dances, and set off fireworks.
