On Sunday, from 1:30 pm- 5:00 pm, the Roslyn AYLUS branch helped out at a school of the Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island.
We learned a lot of details about being a teaching assistant here, and it gave us a chance to communicate with Chinese learners of all ages. It is really a good experience for the teacher and helps the students. At the beginning of class, they learned some fundamental Chinese knowledge, like pinyin and Cantonese. The AYLUS members will do more individual helping and teaching to ensure everyone understands the teachers’ directions. We show everyone in the class one by one how to write “p” in Chinese. It is really complicated for young students, but we are patient and have a positive attitude. At the end of the class, students made airplanes and matched the words they learned today.
During the hour of Cultural Activities, we learned modern dance and traditional Chinese dance. AYLUS members join the group when they are learning modern dance and help them with detailed hand gestures and movements. In the art and craft class, they help them glue things and make paper flowers. We also enjoy the time to stay with others and help our community. We are also proud to see people of all ethnicities unite under the shared objective of learning Chinese.
