On October 30th, members from the Raritan Valley Branch went to the Aldersgate Outreach Community Center to work with event managers in setting up a food kitchen for disadvantaged people, such as immigrants and impoverished people. The volunteers were first assigned the task of bringing boxes filled with food and medical supplies onto tables situated outside. These boxes had to be unpackaged and organized onto the tables so that anyone who walks through the food kitchen can obtain all the goods that they need. For example, all the dessert foods were put on one table, and all of the beverages were put on another table. Once all of the people in need arrived, volunteers were assigned to a section of the food kitchen in order to distribute the supplies. Other members had to run to the parking lot and bring back shopping carts, so that other people could use them.
Throughout this event, volunteers improved their communication skills through practice, as they often had to talk calmly to those in need. Although there is limited space in this event, we will continue to contribute to our communities through more of these food kitchens in the future!
