On August 27, 2022, guest Sophie Chung from RCA and AYLUS Murrieta members lended a hand to a local food bank and collected bottles to recycle.
“These Mentos don’t expire for two years!” members exclaimed as they wiped down the shelves of the food aisles. Pointing out special edition Skittles and strange gummy candy, they found that the shelves that housed the food were covered in lots of gunk. They worked hard to clean each aisle thoroughly, while keeping an eye out for opened boxes, bags, or containers that were to be discarded. After a quick break in front of the giant fan, they powered through the shelves of toiletries.
From creepy dolls to nostalgic board games, members wiped down aisles of toys, beauty products, and household items, discarding their used wipes into swiftly filling shopping carts. They then wiped down the dusty furniture with tissues, finding that some were covered in more gunk than they first appeared. They then finished the morning off with folding and organizing the clothing section.
The members then got lunch, holding a meeting to decide future dates and deadlines. With the school year beginning, careful planning ensured that all members would stay active while accommodating for school. Then, with newfound determination, 3 members headed off for a local neighborhood to gather plastic bottles to donate the money to a local animal shelter.
The initiative was a major success, and members dug through recycling excitedly to find glass, plastic, and aluminium bottles that neighbors had discarded. The community was happy to give their bottles, and they even gave bags for the members to use since the one they’d brought wasn’t enough. They offered for the members to stop by every other week, an offer which everyone happily accepted. We’re touched by the community’s generosity, and we look forward to gathering more bottles in the future!
