To make the community safer for students and residents, AYLUS Greater Triangle NC, led by President Sky Tianyi Han and Co-President Michael Yang, organized a campaign to install crosswalks and traffic rules at Panther Creek High School and the Channing Park community.
Planning and implementation of the campaign began in August, urging the Channing Park community to install crosswalks and traffic rules to make Panther Creek High School safer for students and residents. Han Tianyi and Yang Tianyi inspected the Changning community and the school site, and contacted the school, the police station, the Cali government, and the Changning Community Owners Committee. Topographic maps were drawn, petitions were drafted. Discuss implementation details.
Petition calls for a pedestrian crossing between Panther Creek High School and the Channing Park community. Panther Creek High School Year 11 student Michael Yang and Year 10 student Sky Tianyi Han joined the petition on behalf of all Channing Park residents. The petition includes signatures from nearly 100 families.
The main reason for this incident is that it is difficult for both current students and new students to walk from PCHS to the community and into the school. Installing pedestrian crossings will make crossing between the two areas easier and safer. Channing Park is a new community of 296 homes (as of 2022) across from Panther Creek High School. Due to the school’s proximity to the community, Panther Creek High School does not provide buses to our community, so students must walk or drive to school. This increases the likelihood of traffic jams. In addition, Panther Creek High School has more than 2,800 students, causing traffic jams at the gates of the two schools during peak hours, making it difficult for students to arrive on time.
If a student chooses to walk to school, the route is unclear. They have to cross the road in heavy traffic, which is very dangerous for them, especially during the morning rush hour. If they are hit by a careless driver, the risk of an accident is high. So the petition seeks to address these issues by putting in place crosswalks and traffic rules. The benefits of installing crosswalks and traffic regulations are significant. For students, it provides a safer route to school, ensuring their safety. For families, it gives peace of mind knowing their children are safe on their way to school. For the school, it reduces the number of vehicles entering and leaving the school, relieves congestion, and ensures normal class time. Finally, it benefits the community and nearby residents, making transportation in the area easier and safer, and promoting a peaceful and harmonious ecological environment.
