On 4/16/22, AYLUS Syosset members volunteered with wildlife authorities at Bethpage State Park to prune native viburnum trees and shrubs from invasive vine growths. Members were provided loppers, trimmers, and other pruning tools to hack away the unwanted growth and free the trees from their restrictive and leeching vines. In the end, years worth of vine growth were successfully removed from approximately 20 trees, promoting a healthier tree with a more plentiful yield of food and shelter for the fauna in the area.
Viburnums are a species of plant that bloom vibrantly colored flowers and provide nesting and berries for birds native to the region. They are a necessary part for the survival of songbirds throughout Long Island and will continue to foster the oncoming generations of birds for as long as they live.
Members who participated include Ryan Leung (4 hours), Jasmine Chen (4 hours), Tommy Tang(4 hours), Mia Li(4 hours), Junhao Chen (4 hours), Shiloh Ye(4 hours), Feilei Li(4 hours), Johnny Zhang(4 hours), and Advisor Julia Jia.
