On 3/26/22, AYLUS Syosset visited the Long Island Native Plant Initiative and helped in removing invasive weeds from potted plants by pulling out the weeds from the pot. Afterwards, a layer of rice hull was spread over the de-weeded soil and the potted plants were put back onto their growing shelves. Through a collaborative effort, around 360 pots were de-weeded, allowing for the plants to gain the maximum nutrients from the soil without other invasive plants leeching their food supply.
The Long Island Native Plant Initiative (LINPI) is an all-volunteer cooperative effort of over 30 non-profit organizations, governmental agencies, nursery professionals, and citizens. Their mission is to protect the genetic integrity and heritage of Long Island native plant populations by establishing commercial sources of genetically appropriate local (ecotypic) plant materials for use in nurseries, landscaping, and habitat restoration activities.
