On January 14, 2022, members of AYLUS’s Raritan Valley Branch gathered at East Brunswick High School, a school to which, or for which, many of us are bound. Once there, we set out for a secluded area of the premises. Overgrown and unkept, the area just behind the school tennis courts was rife with pollution, demonstrating the dereliction that follows disuse.
Over the course of approximately one hour, we coordinated trash bags and grabbers to remove, inter alia, plastic bottles, disposable cups, straws, cans, food wrappers, and plastic bags. Maybe we should be thankful that so much trash was caught in the overgrowth rather than blown away and scattered; we could easily collect all of the trash that had collected therein.
Ultimately, three trash bags filled in no time at all. As we left the school grounds, we continued to spot trash to pick up, reminding us that though we were done for the day, we are never truly finished.
