In September, the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) students continued their in person Help Program.
GPA members Annie Miao (9/11, 2 hrs), Yan Fischer (9/12, 2 hrs) tutored their students in math and reading. They finished going over volume and all the different formulas for various types of objects. They also started talking about surface area — what it means, how to find it, and how to use nets. Reading three picture books with them about food, modes of transportation, and the planets. We then discussed their contents and illustrations.
GPA member Catherine Feng (9/13) tutored her students in math. Catherine worked from 3:30 – 6:30 pm. This week, they focused on Greatest Common Factors (GCF) and Least Common Multiples (LCM) again. They used Venn Diagrams to solve questions and find the LCM for different numbers. They then applied the Venn Diagram visualization to some GCF problems, before focusing on the concept that the product of two numbers’ GCF and LCM is equal to the product of the two numbers. Catherine (9/13) tutored another student in reading from 8:15 – 9:15 pm. They read three picture books with them about activities, a greedy tiger, and a baby dragon. They then discussed their contents and illustrations.
GPA members Karen Yang (9/15, 1 hr), Eliana Du (9/15, 1 hr), and Kevin Song (9/15, 1 hr) launched our new 2021-2022 writers’ workshop. First, we introduced ourselves and the workshop outline. We highlighted the publishing process and what we were about, including when we met and where. We then went into break out rooms and interacted with the students as they wrote a memoir. We then discussed the art of the memoir, including when and where to start, what a memoir is and what makes a good memoir. Over 40 students from around the country showed up, and it was great interacting with them! Last, we gave students a writing prompt. The workshop is to grow a child’s writing from conferencing, talks from authors. As the Scholastic writing and arts competition (and other writing competitions!) are coming up, this is also a perfect opportunity to get feedback and improve.
The program allows GPA members to provide reading, writing, speaking, communication, and more help to their communities.
