On August 12th, 2021, San Diego students of AYLUS organized the 83rd online English for the Elderly activity. The goal of this activity is to help elderly men and women from China learn the basics of English so that they’re able to use them in their daily lives.
Due to the current circumstances, AYLUS San Diego moved their activity online, teaching the elderly English through zoom video conferences. Due to several factors, this activity has received more volunteer participation, to a point where the entire lesson was several 1-on-1 sessions. First, both the elderly and the volunteers joined the main zoom room, for attendance. Next, they split up into several break-out rooms in pairs, for 1-on-1 sessions. At the end of the activity, everyone returned to the main zoom classroom for a final check and to receive feedback for the new activity.
Through this activity, AYLUS volunteers were able to teach 9 elderly men and women common English phrases and sentences for one and a half hours. Not only were the “students” able to improve their understanding of and ability to speak the English language, but the volunteers also improved their patience and confidence through this event.
The following students participated in the 83rd Virtual English for the Elderly activity:
Daniel Li for 1.5 hrs on Thursday, 8/12.
Andrew Zhou for 1.5 hrs on Thursday, 8/12.
