AYLUS-Syosset Environmental team held a beach clean-up project (7/11/2021, #3)

On Sunday 7/11/21, AYLUS Syosset members Alan Huang, Jasmine Chen and Emily Lin conducted a cleanup event at Howard Beach, Queens, NY, partnering with AYLUS Manhasset Branch.

Howard Beach is located in the southwest of Queens Borough, New York city. There are lots of improperly disposed garbage on the beach which makes this clean-up worthwhile. We drove over 40 minutes in the morning to get there, and collected two bags of garbage, after we liberated some aquatic animals from the fish market to their native habitat.

In the end, we took out the trash bags and disposed them to a municipal dumpster.

Trash pollution is a pervasive issue in much of the world today, and may bring disproportionate harm to the environment if left unchecked, leading to the deaths of various flora and fauna. This event was an attempt to help the local community with excess trash buildup. Keeping the local beach clean will translate to conditions which are much more conducive to biodiversity and beauty, as aquatic animals are susceptible to large amounts of plastics present in the environment.

Participants included Alan Huang (2 hours), Jasmine Chen (2 hours), Emily Lin (2 hours), Elizabeth Huang, Francina Liu, and Julie Jia from Syosset Branch, and Matthew Yang (2 hours), Benjamin Yang (2 hours), Joanna Yang (2 hours), Loretta Liu (2 hours), Gavin Cao (2 hours) from Manhasset Branch.
