In July 2021, the Greater Princeton branch of AYLUS started a volunteer program with the Trenton Animal Shelter (72 Escher St, Trenton, NJ 08609, 609-989-3254, http://www.tas.petfinder.com/, Email: thleas.dogs@gmail.com), and helped to find loving homes for dogs, cats, small animals, reptiles, amphibians, and/or fish.
The Trenton Animal Shelter is a wonderful place dedicated to providing medical care, animal fostering and adoption opportunities, and training services to dogs and cats that have dealt with unfortunate circumstances in Trenton, NJ.
GPA member Amber Yu attended the shelter’s orientation and learned about the safety protocols, volunteer requirements, scheduling and rules. There are lots of activities that volunteers can take part in, such as walking, feeding, watering and socializing with the animals according to handling guidelines.
Here are some activities that volunteers take part in:
Walk and socialize animals under handling guidelines and based on scheduled hours; Feed animals; Change water; Give treats, toys and blankets in kennels; Clean kennels and office areas; Organize supplies; Clean debris and feces from all indoor and outdoor areas; Screen applications for foster and adoption; Assist with Meet & Greets.
The Trenton Animal Shelter relies on dedicated volunteers to support their work daily. If you love animals and are interested in volunteering, then this is a great opportunity for you. Please visit their website at https://tarnj.org/volunteer. A team member will be in touch with the applicant as soon as possible.
Amber Yu (7/23, 2.5 hrs) volunteered to play with three dogs separately. They seemed thrilled to get attention. Overall, this was a very rewarding experience and Amber looks forward to future visits with more GPA members.
