Greater Temecula Valley AYLUS Lends a Hand to a Local Farm in June (1st) 2021

On June 22nd, Greater Temecula Valley AYLUS(GTVA) members Ally Negulescu (2.5 hrs), Adora Xiao (2 hrs), Julie Lu(1.5 hrs), Jessica Lu(1.5 hrs), and Kaitlyn Hetsko(1.5 hrs) volunteered at their local farm and helped to harvest produce.

Did you know that California produces a gratuitous amount of fruit and vegetables for the country? This can be to the tune of over a third of the vegetables and two-thirds of fruit and nuts. Of course, these fruits and vegetables must be picked, packed, and shipped to consumers worldwide. Thus, members of GTVA went to a local farm to assist in harvesting fruits and vegetables including cucumbers, zucchini, and squash for the season.

GTVA team was happy to support and lend a hand to The Outreach Farm Project which supplies the Temecula Community Mission of Hope and other local food pantries with fresh locally organic grown produce.  The Outreach Farm Project began in the Spring of 2009. There was a large shortage of food to meet the needs of those going without in the region and there was very little fresh produce available to fill in basic nutritional needs. Because of this gap the Outreach Farm Project was born. Approximately 3 acres were dedicated in partnership with a local flower farm and the farm manager’s family to grow fresh vegetables to help.
The entire program works with volunteers to harvest the crops. All of the produce grown from this project is donated directly to the Temecula Community Mission of Hope for distribution to other local food pantries in our region and Fallbrook.

Members enjoyed warm weather, picking fresh produce, companionship, and a slightly terrifying drive up and down one or two mountains. We hope to continue this event weekly on Tuesdays, and look forward to helping the Outreach Farm Project again!
