On June 15th, 2021, and June 17th, 2021 AYLUS Riverside County members Jacob Navarro, Matthew, and Alexander Nguyen, Korbin Nguyen as well as Sophie Chung got together to contribute to a citizen science research project called Penguin Watch. The main Penguin Watch team consists of researchers from different organizations such as the University of Oxford, WWF, NOAA, and many others. This project is 43% completed and over 37,000 volunteers worldwide have contributed to it to this date.
The goal is to study the penguins and to see how threats such as climate change, pollution, and commercial fishery can impact their decline and how we can protect them. This project helps to not only detect chick survival but also helps to determine chick mortality and how their breeding time is affected by environmental conditions.
AYLUS Riverside County worked as a group together classifying different images based on eggs, nests, chicks, and adult penguins. By contributing to this project, the group has helped scientists get a better understanding of how the threat of climate change impacts the survival and breeding pattern of the penguins. The group will continue working on this project until it is completed.
