AYLUS Riverside County Supports Galactical Research on June 3rd, 2021 (4)

On June 3rd, 2021, several AYLUS members of the Riverside County, CA branch met up online to work on a scientific research project together. AYLUS member Sophie Chung presented the project “Cosmological Jellyfish” to the group. This project originated in Germany through scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Astronomy, a premier research institute. The goal among others is to study the galaxies on a deeper level, their interaction with one another, their formation, and evolution within the universe.

The members then discussed what galaxies are and how a jellyfish-like galaxy, as the scientists call it, would look like versus a non-jellyfish-like galaxy. They furthermore discussed the galaxies’ characteristics and compared them to marine jellyfish. Based on the acquired knowledge, the group then critically analyzed different photos that were made available. Then the team got to work and each member categorized various images for this galactical project.

Volunteers: Sophie Chung 1.5 hr, Chandler Berry 1 hr, Evan Chang 1 hr, Kayla Paulsen 1 hr,  Alyssa Paulsen 1 hr,  Korbin Bui 1 hr.
