On 4/24/21, members of the AYLUS Syosset participated in the assembly and preparation of a composter for a house in the community of Arlington, Virginia.
The AYLUS Syosset branch brought the unassembled composter to the backyard of the home and began to assemble it. After assembly, the members produced a large hole in the hard soil for the composter to sit in. After a sufficiently sized hole was established, the composter was positioned within the hole and properly set up. Directly following this, the members procured scraps of cardboard, paper, leaves, twigs, and food scraps in order to be composted. These were either already supplied by the house, or were scavenged that day at the local park. These biodegradable materials were then placed within the composter in layers, mixed, and eventually sealed up.
This composter will ultimately aid the local environment by allowing food scraps and other naturally degradable waste, to be turned into a nutrient rich soil instead of being left to rot in a landfill, also reducing food waste.
Participants included John Thach (3 hours), Simon Koide (3 hours), Josh Lemay.
