On 4/18/21, AYLUS Syosset member John Thach taught a 120 minute Advanced Placement United States History tutoring course to AP students Michelle Zheng and Dora Nguyen.
In the class, various eras of American history were reviewed and discussed. These included topics from the Progressive Era (1890s-1918), Modern Era (1920s), as well as American policy during World War II. Emphasis was placed on comparing and contrasting the various policies enacted by specific administrations, such as Theodore Roosevelt’s “Big Stick Diplomacy” versus William Howard Taft’s “Dollar diplomacy.” US Presidents’ policies towards Latin America was also a major focus, particularly Woodrow Wilson’s guidelines regarding Mexico and the intervention in Nicaragua.
US involvement in World War I was also a major focus for this course. Topics included Americans’ initial reaction to the war in Europe, Woodrow Wilson’s response after the Lusitania crisis, William Jennings Bryan’s resignation from office, the Supreme Court Case Schenck v. United States, as well as US armament and entry into the conflict. Following the World War I review was a short lesson on US politics during World War II.
This introductory class serves as a stepping stone for further initiatives to be undertaken in an attempt to educate and aid those who are interested in or are studying US history.
