In cooperation with students from Yorktown High School (Arlington, Virginia), AYLUS-Syosset member John Thach presented a lecture about the cuisine and food culture originating from Vietnam. This presentation revolved around Heo Quay, a dish which holds much importance in Vietnam and the Vietnamese diaspora. Covered was the history, significance, and a recipe of the dish. A short Question and Answer period was given after the presentation.
This event was designed in response to the recent increase in hate crimes targeted towards the AAPI community. These events highlight the pervasive ignorance and misunderstanding regarding Asian cultures. To mitigate this issue, John is establishing a series of various presentations aimed at promoting and informing people on Vietnamese culture, in an attempt to increase appreciation.
Participants included: John Thach (1.5 Hours), Sebastian Olmsted, Dora Nguyen, Christina Smith.
