On 4/4/2021, six members of the Syosset AYLUS (Leo Cheng, John Thach, Ryan Leung, Alan Huang, Emily Lin, and Greene Xue) taught a ninety-minute English class to multiple newly immigrated high school students with varying degrees of proficiency in English.
In class, there were 3 classes with 3 levels; Intro (Ryan and Greene), Intermediate (Alan, Leo and Emily), and Advanced (John). Breakout rooms ended 30 minutes early to give students the time to finish an essay which they were assigned the week prior. This essay was a personal essay in which students tell their stories about being Asian American, their personal experiences with racism in America, as well as their thoughts on the increase in hate crimes against the AAPI community. They used this time to discuss their thoughts as well, and received writing tips from the tutors. These essays were proofread and revised, where they will soon be presented next class.
The intermediate class tutors Leo Cheng, Alan Huang and Emily Lin finished a chunk of the unit “Time to celebrate!”. Adverbial clauses of time were taught to the students and many writing and speaking exercises were presented to the students. A review was also given to reinforce and refresh the student’s knowledge of infinitive verbs and conjugations.
Student tutor John Thach taught the advanced English proficiency course for AYLUS Syosset’s 33rd online ESL tutoring class. This class, the eighth chapter of Cambridge’s 3A, Fifth edition Interchange textbook was completed, where students learned about different methods of learning along with English grammar. Directly following the textbook activities, the students had time to finish an essay which they were assigned the week prior. This essay was a personal essay in which students tell their stories about being Asian American, their personal experiences with racism in America, as well as their thoughts on the increase in hate crimes against the AAPI community. They used this time to discuss their thoughts as well, and received writing tips from John. These essays were proofread and revised, where they will soon be presented next class.
Ryan and Greene went over the different remedies of combating a cold. The different things such as chicken noodle soup, tea with honey, cough syrup and etc. were mentioned. The remainder of the time was spent working on an essay about the different perspectives and life experiences of Asian Americans, along with their reactions to recent Asian hate crimes.
