On 12/27/2020, six members of the Syosset AYLUS (Leo Cheng, John Thach, Ryan Leung and Alan Huang, Emily Lin, Jasmine Chen) taught a ninety-minute English class to multiple newly immigrated high school students with varying degrees of proficiency in English.
The lesson consisted of three parts: Reading, Writing and Speaking.
Reading tutors Emily Lin and Leo Cheng simply continued reading the short story, “Gift of the Magi,” which was started last week. However, since there were a few new students, they reread an easier story, “The Egg” from Lesson #13. There was no homework for this week.
Student tutors Jasmine Chen and John Thach taught the writing portion of AYLUS Syosset’s 20th online ESL Tutoring class. This class, the tutors developed a new lesson based off of the New Years Holiday, with graphics and written prompts generally relating to the event. The first taught portion of the class was “storytime,” where students were asked to outline full stories based off of certain selected photos that were shown, all without any prior context given. The next lesson was a shortened vocabulary section, where students studied different vocabulary words relating to the New Years Holiday. After vocab, the students were given tips on making their writing more clear and concise. They each had an opportunity to put what they learned to use, as following the lesson, each student had to write a response to a writing prompt of their choice. The class was instructed in English to immerse the students in an English environment.
Today in class, many new students as well as returning students came to class. Alan Huang and Ryan Leung reviewed over emphasizing different words in a sentence to change the meaning of the sentence. We also went through some articles and answered open ended questions related to, but not about the article. For weekly students, we had them watch the same Chinese movie with subtitles as last time and answer questions.
The following 6 students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: John Thach(1.5 hours), Leo Cheng (1.5 hours), Alan Huang(1.5 hours) and Ryan Leung (1.5 hours) Jasmine Chen(1.5 hours), Emily Lin(1.5 hours).
