AYLUS Syosset & Manhasset Branches Jointly Taught a Chinese Classic Literature Appreciation Program (11/9/2020, #8)

On 11/9/2020, two members of AYLUS Syosset (Jasmine Chen and Alan Huang) and two members of Manhasset AYLUS (Matthew Yang and Elise Zhu) held the eighth collaborative Chinese Literature Appreciation class, tutoring 5th-grade Chinese-school students to appreciate a Chinese Classic– ”Journey to the West”–through reading, analysis, and discussion.

Attending students were grouped into two breakout rooms, each with at least 2 tutors and at least one advisor. The Ponddy Reader application was utilized as the educational tool through which tutors taught students. In this class, teachers continued their read-throughs and presentations about “Journey to the West”. Students took turns reading each paragraph, with the tutors assisting them with pronunciation and understanding of the text. Tutors also prepared short vocabulary word presentations and quick videos and games (utilizing YouTube and Quizizz) to promote student engagement as well as having fun.

The lessons lasted one hour and were followed by a short discussion and conclusion section.

The following students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: Matthew Yang (1 hour), Elise Zhu (1 hour) are members of the Manhasset branch, and from the Syosset branch Alan Huang (1 hour) and Jasmine Chen (1 hour).
