Volunteers continue to transcribe historical documents as a part of the Phoenix AYLUS Archivist club. Sor far this month, a total of 20 documents were transcribed.
Yongfen Chen transcribed 11 documents: Preparing Ditches for blasting, USS Pickerel, January 1943 – March 1943 pg. 1, pg. 2, pg. 3, pg. 4, and pg. 5, USS Peto, July 1945 – August 1945 pg 1, USS Pilotfish, May 1944 – July 1944 pg 1, USS Pilotfish, May 1944 – July 1944 pg2, USS Pike, July 1943 – September 1943 pg 1, and USS Plaice, November 1944 – December 1944 pg 1.
“I did Preparing Ditches for Blasting. I didn’t know they had a highway patrol.”
“I did USS Pickerel, January 1943 – March 1943 pg 2,3,4. I learned that USS Pickerel arrived at Pearl Harbor on August 26, 1942, sunk 3 ships of a total of 6,070 tons and the deck torpedo tubes continue to be unsatisfactory.”
“I did USS Pickerel, January 1943 – March 1943 pg 5. I learned that the No.3 main engine is out of commission due to 2 broken cylinder head studs.”
Annie Fitzgerald completed 2 documents: Jacquelyn Dowd Hall pg. 8 and pg.9.
“From these documents, I’ve learned about the Southern Oral History Program which aims to share the stories of African Americans from the 1900s. They have done many projects to help educate the world such as writing books and giving speeches. These took an hour. ”
Amy Xie wrote out 7 documents: Case File of Edward Furlong pg. 5, John Arthur Johnson vs. The United States of America pg. 304, pg. 305, pg. 306, pg. 307, pg. 308, and pg. 309.
“All of the John Arthur Johnson vs. United States of America documents took 30 -48 minutes each. This was a United States Supreme Court case in which the Court ruled the Residual Clause of the Armed Career Criminal Act was unconstitutionally vague and in violation of due process. I learned that John was guilty and was not very nice to women. In addition, he faced many charges. The format the original document was typed in contained long paragraphs and real court Q and As. I thought that they were fun to read through and understand what had happened. The Case File of Edward Furlong pg. 5 took me less than 5 minutes. It was tricky to type this one because the writing was in a very fancy cursive font. I learned that Edward Furlong was British.”
