Members of AYLUS-Phoenix showed their support for premature babies in local hospitals by creating handmade amigurumi octopi during September and October 2020. Premature babies can face a range of serious health issues such as feeding difficulties, developmental decay, and breathing problems. The octopi were designed to comfort these little ones by reminding them of the umbilical cord through the long tentacles, which the babies can grab onto. With the help of baby essentials from 123 baby box, these octopi provided a soft and playful companion for premature babies during their stay in the hospital.
These octopi have been proven to experience better breathing and more regular heartbeats, which can eventually lead to higher levels of oxygen in their blood. The amigurumi octopi were also made in a variety of colors to account for children of all genders. This event is important because the Phoenix Branch is continually making an effort to serve everyone in the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. These ear savers will shortly be delivered to local hospitals, and branch members also look forward to continuing this event and making more amigurumi octopi for families that need them!
The youth members that participated in this event were Marie Chen (15hours), Carol Chen (15hours) and Jenny Dong (15hours).
