AYLUS Syosset & Manhasset Branches Jointly Taught a Chinese Classic Literature Appreciation Class (9/28/2020, #2)
On 9/28/2020, three members of AYLUS Syosset (Jasmine Chen, Greene Xue & Alan Huang) and two members of Manhasset AYLUS (Matthew Yang & Loretta Liu) held their second class tutoring 5th grade students to appreciate a Chinese Classic–Journey to the West–through reading, talking and discussions.
Attending students were grouped into three breakout rooms, each with 1-2 tutors and one advisor. The Ponddy Reader website was utilized as an educational tool to teach the students. Because of the varying degrees of completion of the chapter “The Birth of the Monkey King” in the first class, the five students in the 9/28/20 class were split into the same groups they were in the previous class. Students took turns reading each paragraph, with the tutors assisting them with pronunciation and understanding of the text. This class, teachers also took the feedback students and their parents gave at the end of the last class and added some videos, cartoons, and other engaging content for the students to enjoy. The lessons lasted one hour and were followed by a short discussion and feedback section. After the lessons, tutors stayed behind to check with students and parents what they thought was good and what the teachers thought they could improve upon for the next class.
The following students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: Alan Huang (1.5 hours), Jasmine Chen (1.5 hours), Greene Xue (1.5 hours), and Olivia Jiang (1.5 hours) from the Syosset branch, and Matthew Yang (1.5 hours) and Loretta Liu (1.5 hours) are members of the Manhasset branch.
(the discussion/feedback session lasted approximately half an hour)
