Oct 2nd,
Emily helped Poppy read through the first half of the fifth chapter in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” There were a lot of words Poppy couldn’t recognize, so they went through each word, learned the definitions, and constructed sentences. Some of these words included: tottering, spleens, parchment, collapsable, and burnished.(1.5hrs)
Oct 3rd,
During Emily and Hedy’s tutoring session, Hedy wanted to use her book full of questions relating to science. (Some of the questions included: Why do eggs contain so much protein when it isn’t meat? Why does the reflection of my face look upside down on a spoon?) Emily walked through all of Hedy’s questions with her for the session. After each explained question, she asked Hedy to teach it back to her, to make sure she understood.(1h)
Oct 18th,
Hedy read her Beezus and Ramona book and Emily helped her on the words she couldn’t pronounce. They looked up definitions and learned synonyms. After, Hedy wanted to learn how seeds formed into plants, so they researched the topic, and Hedy taught the process she learned back to Emily.(1h)
Oct 23rd,
Emily and Poppy finished the fifth chapter from the first book of the Harry Potter series, and went over circled words that Poppy didn’t know how to read afterwards.(0.85hrs)
Hedy and Emily went over the words that Hedy had trouble spelling. Some of these included nontoxic and refrigerator. After sorting those through, Hedy chose for her session to be art related this time, so Oct 25,
Emily taught her how to do some origami. They folded paper airplanes, cut snowflakes, and made a paper masks.(1h)
Oct 30,
Emily helped Poppy read chapter 5 of the first Harry Potter book. Poppy learned some new words like prefect and compartment.(1h)
10/7/2020-
During their most recent lesson, Elissa Hyun and Alice worked together on 6 worksheets involving ELA. They went over similes for the first 25 minutes, grammar the next 10 minutes, and reading and comprehension the last 25 minutes. They also did some comparing and contrasting and went over what some similes meant. Alice seemed to have a better understanding of similes after the two worksheets they did together.
Sophia Yi taught Maxwell about pronouns, possessive pronouns, and homophones (too, to, two, their, there, they’re). They also did a review on subject, verbs, and nouns. Lastly, they did past, present, and future tenses.
