Despite the COVID-19 outbreak, the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) continues its ABC Youth Chess Program to help kids learn how to play chess by moving the program online.
Sarah Yan was the Champion of 2017 NJ Open U1600, while Erick Yan was the Champion of 2016 Manhattan Open Mixed Doubles Team. They are teaching around 12 school-aged children how to play chess and various strategies used to win a game. Sarah and Erick taught various skills used to defeat one’s opponent in the complicated game of chess such as pins and forks. With the continuation of the online classes, we can help students who have the passion for learning chess, even during this hard time.
The GPA’s ABC Youth Chess Program is continuing with online classes every Monday. During class, they have moved on to trickier 3 move checkmates. These 3 move checkmates comprise queen + rook along with queen + bishop. Every class gets trickier as the position of the mate in 3s gets more challenging. After every class, they play games against each other and have a fun “rock, paper, scissors” way of seeing who gets to decide the game pairings for that class. Having learned a variety of skills, the students are improving their visualization and tactic skills.
