On Friday, July 31, 2020, Katherine Sha from the East Cobb Branch participated in the Summer Camp Program and taught for three hours.
This program was initially started due to the cancellation of summer camps caused by COVID-19. Its goal is to provide entertainment and teach different skills to children who may be bored at home or want to learn something new. The volunteer or volunteers may teach 1 on 1 or in groups no more than 5. By teaching these kids, we want to help them have fun and relieve some burden from their parents.
Activities that are offered include tennis, soccer, cooking, art, reading/writing, music theory, piano, dance, Chinese, and Rubik’s Cube.
Katherine Sha contributed by teaching three kids drawing.
The lessons went pretty well, and the kids seemed to follow along with relative ease. I propped up my phone so they could follow both verbal and visual instructions while they drew. This week, I taught them a bit of cartooning after teaching shading and shape drawing for the past few weeks. Since there were a mix of boys and girls in the class, it was sometimes difficult to find something they wanted to draw, but we eventually found something that they were interested in.
Before the first few lessons, I was unsure of what I wanted to teach them, but after chatting with them and discussing more of their interests, it was easier to find something to draw that would interest them. There were no major issues, but since some students worked faster than others, they needed additional things to keep them busy while they waited.
