East Cobb Branch Holds Summer Camp Session III on Week of 7/20-7/26, 2020

On Wednesday, July 22, 2020, Isabel Liu from the East Cobb Branch participated in the Summer Camp Program and taught for one hour.

This program was initially started due to the cancellation of summer camps caused by COVID-19. Its goal is to provide entertainment and teach different skills to children who may be bored at home or want to learn something new. The volunteer or volunteers may teach 1 on 1 or in groups no more than 5. By teaching these kids, we want to help them have fun and relieve some burden from their parents.

Activities that are offered include tennis, soccer, cooking, art, reading/writing, music theory, piano, dance, Chinese, and Rubik’s Cube.

Isabel Liu contributed by teaching 4 kids reading and writing.

I would say the lesson went very well. This was the second lesson for them, so I reviewed foreshadowing and metaphors, which we learned the week before. I then taught them about hyperboles and imagery (gave examples and had them practice) and gave them a passage in which they dissected each part and looked for examples of imagery. Some students did not want to speak up when I asked questions, but they responded most of the time and it was an overall good experience.

I was a bit nervous, but not as nervous as the first lesson. There were really no issues other than the fact that one kid didn’t want to turn on his camera or microphone, but we went on just fine and he used the chat. I also had some trouble with zoom and screensharing, but that was just my mistake.
