On June 23, 2020, student members of the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) teamed up and taught kids from West Windsor in the subjects of reading and writing. The 1-hour class offered by GPA members Karen Yang and Kathy Yang teach 5 middle schoolers, Aria, Claire, Victor, Meisu, and Helen, on reading and writing.
This week was our first class, with an introduction to how to write a persuasive letter. Our students are all middle school kids and began class by entering the Google Classroom and Google Meets. This Google Classroom is where most assignments, materials, and questions will be posted. The kids began with a warm up writing sample answering a series of questions about quarantine and their thoughts on school, while responding to their classmates. Then, I taught them a lesson with Google Slides and sample essays about persuasive letters and what claims, reasoning, evidence and rebuttals were. Finally, we began their homework by allowing the kids to write their claims on whether we should have virtual schooling in next school year. Finally the kids played a Kahoot reviewing this material and I began talking about the Book Talks that they will give a later class. All in all, it was a very fun class!
