Despite the COVID-19 outbreak, the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) continued its ABC Chess program to help kids learn how to play chess by moving the program online.
GPA volunteer Sarah Yan was the Champion of 2017 NJ Open U1600, while Erick Yan was the Champion of 2016 Manhattan Open Mixed Doubles Team. They are teaching around 12 school-aged children how to play chess and various strategies used to win a game. Sarah and Erick taught various skills used to defeat one’s opponent in the complicated game of chess such as pins and forks. With the continuation of the online classes, we can help students who have the passion for learning chess, even during this hard time.
With the stay at home orders still in place, ABC Chess is continuing their online chess classes. Every Monday, there are various positions and skills that the students always enjoy learning about, such as different openings and endgame tactics. Teachers Sarah Yan and Erick Yan always enjoy teaching, and the students enjoy learning the creative ways about different chess openings. Having such a variety of different chess openings to choose from sparks creativeness from each player.
Participants: Sarah Yan & Erick Yan (May 25, June 1 & 8, 1.5 hours each)
