The debate club in the Sugar Land Branch continues to grow this month. This club, founded and led by Andrew Lian, focuses on helping elementary school students develop skills in critical thinking, collaboration, persuasion, and communication.
Andrew is a seventh grade student from Sartartia Middle School and Spidersmart Team Debate. He founded the club during the COVID-19 pandemic, when all the Fort Bend students have to stay at home and learn remotely. “I would like to contribute to the community in this difficult time”. Andrew said, “A lot of kids are at home and have extra spare time. I would like them to spend their time wisely.
Debate provides life-long benefits to students in a variety of ways. Participating the debate club can help them build confidence and improve critical thinking.”
In May 2020, the club studied and practiced on two topics: (1) Should students wear uniforms; and (2) Should every family have a pet.
The meeting dates in May were on 5/5, 5/12, 5/19, and 5/26.
