This past Sunday, on May 25, 2020, members of the Phoenix Branch came together from 1 PM to 4 PM (3 hours) to sew face masks that will be donated to local hospitals and other facilities in need. At this event, face masks were made from cloth by first cutting and sewing two layers of cloth together to create a more effective mask before ironing and disinfecting the masks to form their final shape and making them ready for use. All of the participating members of the Phoenix Branch took precautionary measures to prevent any unnecessary contact, including wearing face masks and avoiding direct contact with others as well as ensuring less than 10 people at the event in order to help flatten the curve. Through the event, the members of AYLUS-Phoenix were able to see how they could actively work to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. This is especially important since many medical and testing facilities need help and support in order to more successfully carry out their operations and continue to fight the pandemic, and by working to make face masks and help the frontline workers, AYLUS-Phoenix and its members are doing their part to aid this cause. Making face masks is definitely a great activity for the AYLUS-Phoenix Branch to help the local frontline workers and researchers in the community, and we look forward to continuing to do similar events!
The members who participated in this event were Amanda Xu, Audrey Zhang, Ethan Wei, Katherine Wei, Marina Hu, Michael Chen, Michelle Yu, and Steven Zeng.
