On Saturday February 15, 2020, AYLUS Columbus Branch members Michelle Zong, Dorian Tricaud, Amy Xuan, Eileen Liang, Alice Nie, and Michelle Lin spent the afternoon volunteering at a Kroger Food Pantry assistant with adult advisers Shuangmei Zhao and Xiang Zong. The Kroger Food Pantry was established in 2012 for individuals and families with household incomes less than 200% of the Federal Poverty Level to receive fresh fruits and vegetables as well as bread and dairy products. They are open four days a week and their goal is to end hunger while co-creating communities where everyone thrives.
During our participation on Saturday, we were tasked with the job of separating and bagging consumable yellow squash from bad ones. After three hours of hardworking, we went through approximately 45 boxes of squashes and hundreds of bags. We managed to fill one and a half industrial sized food bins full of bagged yellow squashes. We hope our efforts are able to make a positive difference in someone’s life who is less fortunate than us. We are thankful for the opportunity to give back and benefit our community.
