Greater Princeton AYLUS Starts Feeding America Event to Honor Dr. Martin Luther King on January 20, 2020

Food is quite literally a necessity for humans to live. However, over 37 million in the United States have food insecurity. That equates to about 1 in every 9 people. Therefore, the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) is participating in another AYLUS national event, Feeding America, to help solve the problem of food insecurity-a lack of consistent access to food-in the United States.

On January 20, 2020, MLK Day, GPA students went to the West Windsor Arts Center (952 Alexander Rd, Princeton Junction, NJ 08550) and joined the West Windsor Arts Council, the WW Human Relations Council, and the African American Parent Support Group as they partner with Send Hunger Packing/Mercer Street Friends, Rise Community Services, Crochet for a Cause, and Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK).

Through the MLK Day of Service, 10 am – 1 pm, GPA members participated in several projects supporting local service organizations who help our neighbors in need: packaging food for weekend food kits for local children on food assistance for Send Hunger Packing WW-P; packaging healthy bedtime kits for Rise Community Services (pajamas, toothbrushes, toothpaste, books); creating hats and scarves for veterans for Crochet for a Cause; wrapping utensil packages for use at TASK; creating get well soon cards for children in hospitals; adding their personal messages to the “Dream Wall”.

Participants (3 hours for all): Donna Nagorny, Amber Yu, Mingjie Liu, Xin Chen, and Fengqi Wen.
