Greater Princeton AYLUS (GPA) “Community Service” team served as camp counselors at the Church in Hamilton (NJ) on August 23, 2019.
The summer camp lasted for a week, with all the days preparing the campers for the show on the last day, Friday. This day started like the other days. The headteachers and all the counselors attended a short meeting that detailed what everyone would be doing that day to prepare for the show. In the morning, the classes each separated and went into their individual classrooms to learn the final part of their lesson.
The GPA team helped to quiz the campers in preparation for the Jeopardy. This Jeopardy was the same as the one on TV, except instead of individual contestants, the four classes were turned into four teams. The questions were about all the stuff learned during the camp. This was meant to test the campers on their knowledge that they gained over the course of camp. After Jeopardy, each of the classes split up to rehearse their skits and their songs. The counselors were responsible for making the props and fixing any last minute things.
Finally, it was showtime. Each performance was unique and clearly demonstrated what the campers learned. Samuel and Amber each walked their own group of campers to the stage. After checking the microphone, they guided the children to start their performance. All the parents enjoyed the show. Once the performance concluded, everyone said their goodbyes and the camp concluded till next year.
It was a great opportunity for GPA volunteers to work with younger kids and an unforgettable volunteer experience.
