Greater Princeton AYLUS (GPA) “Community Service” team continued to work as camp counselors at Church in Hamilton (NJ) on August 21 and August 22, 2019.
This summer camp had more than 40 campers that were on the younger side. The GPA team took this as a great opportunity to work with children and teach them how to communicate with one another and make new friends.
During all the mornings of the camp, all the counselors arrived early and attended a short meeting where they could share their feedback with the headteachers. In addition, the headteachers re-assigned roles and tasks based upon the daily schedule. After the short meeting, the counselors headed into the main classroom where the campers would be gathering to prepare for morning activities. This included singing and playing small games. On Wednesday, Campers were also instructed to design camp t-shirts. Everyone was extremely creative and couldn’t wait to show their parents what they made.
In the afternoons, the team assisted the campers with lessons and group time. They led campers in making props and helped direct rehearsal for the short skits that would be performed at the Friday night performance. Another fun activity was teaching the campers to make dumplings. Kids made all kinds of strangely-shaped dumplings. The dumplings may not have looked “perfect”, but the fun everyone had and the value of teamwork was perfect.
We were delighted to be a part of the summer camp. It was a great way to contribute to the community and learn to be a great example for others.
