June 17-21,2019 East Cobb Branch “Give A Hand” Summer Event VII– Deliver Lunch

During the week of June 17, 2019, 11 members of East Cobb Branch participated in the YMCA Deliver Lunch Program.

The program’s goal is to serve over 300 children each day over school breaks. It needs many volunteers to help deliver and serve lunches to local kids. These children may not be able to have a healthy meal when school is out. The program also inspires volunteers to communicate with the children.

On Monday, 4 members (Selina HuangSusanna HuangMaxwell JiangYuanhao Jay Pan) went to Clifton Ridge and gave out 40 lunches in total for 2.5 hours. On that day, large amounts of kids came to pick up the lunches and the volunteers played with the kids. Not only were there AYLUS members but there were also many other volunteers. The rest of the food was packed to be given to other locations.

On Tuesday, 4 members (Selina Huang, Susanna Huang, Brian KuangYuanhao Jay Pan) went to Hillcrest and gave out 30 lunches in total for 2.5 hours . On that day, it rained really hard, and the YMCA staff were late to come to Hillcrest. When the Staff came, the 4 volunteers had to pack lunches on the Staff’s truck. Although it rained, many kids came.

On Wednesday, 5 members (Selina Huang, Susanna Huang, Brian Kuang, Jeffrey Kuang, Yuanhao Jay Pancame to help in total for 2.5 hours . All of them went to Clifton Ridge to help pack lunches. Unfortunately, only about 10 kids came out to retrieve a lunch and 15 lunches were given out in total. The rest of the lunches were made to be given to another community.

On Thursday7 members came (Faith Huang, Selina Huang, Susanna Huang, Kevin Shen, Brian KuangYuanhao Jay PanJonathon Wang)Two went to Bella Grand and the rest went to Clifton Ridge in total for 2.5 hours . Clifton Ridge was not very busy that day and only 20 lunches were given out. One little girl even took 7 lunches for the rest of her family. Fortunately, it only started raining when the volunteers left. About 35 lunches were given out at Bella Grand. After packing lunches, volunteers engaged in fun activities with the kids such as playing catch, monkey in the middle, and blowing bubbles.

On Friday, 9 members (Faith Huang, Selina Huang, Susanna Huang, Kevin Shen, Brian KuangJeffrey KuangYuanhao Jay Pan, Jack Xu, Jerry Xu) showed up. They were split into 3 groups. Two went to Clifton Ridge, one went to Bella Grand, and the rest went to Hillcrest. At Hillcrest, the volunteers helped put milks into the pre-packed lunches, and after that many of the volunteers played sports with the kids. they work  in total for 2.5 hours.

Our members participated in the whole process of the program by actively helping out to set up tables and organizing the kids into lines as they come and pick up the lunches. We also packed most of the lunches. The volunteers feel extremely accomplished and proud that they were able to contribute to the community and they had a great time with the staff and the kids.
