June 18-20, the East Cobb Branch of AYLUS held East Cobb Youth Tutoring program at East Cobb Library. A total of four student showed up, with three tutors to help the student.
The East Cobb Branch holds Youth Tutoring program during the summer, giving kids in the Cobb area an opportunity to receive help with their studies. The program gives students a comfortable environment to ask for help in academics. The interaction between tutors and students also makes learning more enjoyable.
On Jun 18, Saloni Jain taught one student from elementary school. The student was a rising first grader who needed help with reading. She first read the student a picture book about Arthur the Monkey, having the student follow the words on the page. Then, she had the student read sight words provided by the parent. During this activity, the student read words she was comfortable with as well as sounded out words she had not read yet. After this activity, she read another picture book to the student. The switching from reading picture books to reading sight words helped the student stay motivated. The student would have fun and learn by having her read a picture book, but then the student would also read words herself. At the end of the session, the student and Saloni also picked out a few books for the student to take home.
On June 19th, Emily Yang tutored 2 students. This time, she taught 2 students, in elementary school, math. In the teaching, she taught the children how to solve problems that involve long division and two digits multiplication. The two students were able to understand the concepts very quickly and enjoyed the lesson
On June 20th Cynthia tutored one 2nd grade girl. She worked with the student on phonics and some concepts such as special sounds and punctuation. The student was greatly interested in learning about the concepts. The students grandma who was previously a teacher, listed concepts that the student had trouble on so the tutor could work more on them with the student.
Cynthia felt joyed being able to help the student. She was easily able to connect with the student because of the students outgoing personality. The student also had a great interest in reading, so she provided some extra reading for the student to work on at home.
