On March 2nd, 2019, volunteers of the East Cobb Branch of AYLUS went to Switzer library under the East Cobb Youth Tutoring program where they taught students of grade k – 8 on math and reading. The program occurs at two libraries in the East Cobb area every Saturday from 2:30 to 4:30 P.M. The program’s goal is to utilize the skills of the members to educate the community they serve.
At the library, two members, Nick Vincent and Maxwell Jiang, were the first to arrive at 2:30. Once there, one student was already waiting for them. Nick promptly went to tutor him on math, of which he needed help in, and Maxwell went to help organize books in the fiction section. After 10 minutes, another student arrived, she was just learning to read and needed help reading some books. Maxwell stopped organizing books and went to tutor her. Soon, two more students arrived, needing help on geometry, Maxwell went to tutor them. As Nick finished, another student arrived needing help and he went to help him. Around this time, Cynthia Ruan came to help tutor the students. Afterwards, the three tutored on, teaching students how to multiply, work with fractions, and find volumes of shapes. Soon, with 4:30 approaching, the tutors were still not done tutoring and time had to be extended to allow for them to finish.
In total, the tutors helped tutor around 15 students, mostly working with elementary students, who needed help on their school’s math and reading homework. To help the students, tutors would create example problems for the students to solve. They would then explain them to the students.
At East Cobb Library, we have two tutors and worked two hours each. The tutors worked on a variety of subjects with the students specifically math and reading. Tutors reviewed quizzes and tests with students and reworked missed questions, and the students were given further exercises similar to the questions missed.
Tutors used different styles of teaching based on the age group. For example, tutors drew out pictures to visualize math problems for kindergarteners to help them understand addition and subtraction. Tutors also gave tips on reading comprehension and how to better understand the authors meaning through the text.
The East Cobb Branch holds tutoring sessions through the East Cobb Youth Tutoring program every Saturday, giving an opportunity for kids in the area access to help with their studies. The program gives students a comfortable environment to ask for help in academics. The interaction between
tutors and students also makes learning more enjoyable.
Attendances: Maxwell Jiang(2.5 hrs), Cynthia Ruan(1.5 hrs), Nick Vincent(2.5 hrs), Eileen Zhang(2 hrs), David Qu(2 hrs).
