On June 21, East Cobb Young Musicians went to 3 local senior centers and performed for three and a half hours of music for senior residents. The performance was a huge success and students did an outstanding job at Altria Senior Living, Arbor Terrace Senior Living, Sunrise Senior Living.
The performances we had at the senior centers was a difficult task to schedule but it was worth it. Students persistently called, emailed, and contacted the senior centers. Due to the struggle to contact the activity directors because of their busy schedules and several meetings they had to go to, students had to continuously contact the senior centers. Some performances at the senior centers were even scheduled just hours before the actual performance. It was really worth all the hard work that students had to do. Going through all the trouble to make the performance happen was truly worthwhile.
Our performance started out with an introduction of our performance and a self-introduction of each performer and ended with a closing statement given by a student. We were welcomed with happy faces. At Arbor Terrace Senior Center, we were even welcomed by a sign that had our names on and balloons. Many seniors even brought their dogs to enjoy the music. Seniors clapped and danced with the music. Their interested in our music made us more motivated to give a great performance. Not only did the seniors enjoy it but the employees were also happy to hear our music.
After the performance, we were complimented by the seniors. One senior stated how her dog really enjoyed the music and hopes for us to come back again to perform. Another senior said how amazing we were at playing and even remembered some of our names from previous performances. Students got the opportunity to take several pictures with the seniors for the senior center’s weekly newspaper. We also got to meet the nice senior, Ms. Connie, who gave us the scarves from two weeks ago. It was so nice to see the seniors so happy when we performed. We were glad that we now see so many familiar faces when we perform.
The performances at the senior centers made us realize how we can create such happiness in others. We are glad that we can meet new people and connect with others through our music. Music has created another meaning in our lives. It has motivated us to work harder to present even greater music to the audience. Music is a language that can connect everyone together despite their ages. We are glad that we have the ability to communicated with others through the language of music. It is so heart-warming to see them so happy.
