As the founder of the Nationwide Gift Drive, on January 30 and 31, the AYLUS San Diego Branch students took advantage of a two-day school break to help the deaf students at the Deaf Community Services of San Diego. From three hours, they sorted the books which they collected in the past few months, drove to the Deaf Community Services of San Diego, and help the Children and Adult Literacy Program of the Deaf Community Services put the books on the shelves in the library.
Deaf Community Services of San Diego, Inc. is the only nonprofit agency in San Diego that serves deaf, hard-of-hearing, and late-deafened children and adults. The clients include seniors with hearing loss, individuals who use cochlear implants or hearing aids, deaf infants and children whose parents are seeking advice and guidance.
Most of the students are immigrants and know neither American Sign Language (ASL) or English. The books will be used by both teachers and students in ASL classes. With the donated books, students will be able to learn ASL and English more effectively.
The volunteer students were: Christopher Yang, Stephen Yang, Leonard Fan, Jessica Fan, Aaron Huang, Ian Kirk, Raymond Li, Andrew Peng, Jackson Shen, Ethan Tran, Timothy Tran, Alan Zhu, and Jenina Zhu.
The San Diego Branch has collected 3981 books for the Nationwide Gift Drive between June 2016 and January 2017 and distributed all of the books to charities in San Diego.
