April 10th was International Good Deeds Day, where more than a million people around the globe all came together on a special, annual occasion for a common cause: to spread positivity, through means of all sorts!
The AYLUS North Shore branch, made of students from Syosset, New York, contributed their goodness by holding a music show at the Cold Spring Hills Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation.
11 talented musicians of Syosset High School dedicated this Sunday morning to performing various selections from their remarkable repertoire, ranging from the Classical genre everyone enjoys, to well-known sing-along Rock songs, to even original pieces composed or arranged by the students themselves. They played through a variety of instruments, including violin, viola, cello, flute and piano, performing solos, duets, and trios. These students were Sean Ahearn, Sydney Chen, Josephine Chuang, Seth Friedman, Allison Hsu, Annie Lin, Vivian Lin, Emily Wong, Shirley Yan, and Andy Yang. Kush Jaiswal, a branch officer, also helped out as a photographer.
The project was named “Good Vibes”, in reference to the happy feeling that can be shared by music.
The participants thought they gained a lot from this experience. “It was so fun for us to make pleasant sounds with our instruments and friends…and the audience had fun listening too! It’s no doubt a win-win. Doing things like this is really the best way to apply the musical skills we’ve learned!”
When the performances concluded, the students brought out a nice surprise gift – blooming carnations with bright colors and a sweet scent, for each resident who attended our special event, sure to put a smile on everybody’s face.
The nursing home gave positive feedback, saying that the group’s activity was “wonderful and meaningful”, and welcomes them to come back.
“It was so fulfilling,” reflected one member, “to see how delighted the residents were to hear our playing. Music really does bring us together!”
