For the past 3 years, the President and Vice President of the Sugar Land, TX Branch have been volunteering weekly at a local Alzheimer’s Care Center. Since the school year started, we’ve expanded our volunteering to include the Sugar Land, TX Branch and plan on continuing weekly! This week, members: Lauren Yang (piano), Nathaniel Zhang (piano), and Michelle Zhang (gu-zheng)played for the seniors with Alzheimer’s. Statistically, according to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, “Music has power—especially for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. And it can spark compelling outcomes even in the very late stages of the disease. Most people associate music with important events and a wide array of emotions. The connection can be so strong that hearing a tune long after the occurrence evokes a memory of it.” Music association is one of the last functions an Alzheimer’s patient still has intact. We hope that we can make a difference for these seniors every week!
