Jefferson Volunteerism Awards

Established in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Jefferson Volunteerism Awards recognize people who make a difference daily in their local communities—unsung heroes who do extraordinary things without expectation of recognition or award.

In September 2021, the New Jersey Governor Murphy officially honored GPA with Jefferson Volunteerism Award, the Nobel Prize for Public Service for Extraordinary Service to Community, in the Youth Volunteer Program Category.

In June 2023, the New Jersey Governor Murphy honored GPA Founding President Cassie Wang with the Jefferson Volunteerism Award, in the Founders/Innovators Category.

The George H. W. Bush Points of Light Awards honors individuals who demonstrate the transformative power of service, and who are driving significant and sustained impact through their everyday actions and words that light the path for other points of light. The George H. W. Bush Points of Light Awards honors outstanding individuals advancing solutions in ways that demonstrate the extraordinary traits of our 41st president: integrity, empathy, respect, optimism, conviction in the face of opposition, and belief in the power of the human spirit to create positive change.

In October 2022, GPA Founding President Cassie Wang was selected for the President George H.W. Bush Points of Light Inspiration Honor Roll. On March 17th, 2023, Cassie received the President George H.W. Bush Daily Point of Light Award (#7511).

Hosted in Hamilton on Oct. 5, 2019, and along with many volunteers across the country in October, GPA volunteered in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s event. Wearing Volunteer shirts, we stood on the two-mile walk and cheered the walkers on. During this three-hour event, we met walkers of all ages, coming together and took part in, some people for many years. They all held flowers and wear wristbands to display their connections to the terrible disease. Overall, 83 Teams and 1000+ participants joined this event, with $140,777 raised!

Members paired up with students and helped them with reading, writing, singing, dancing, sporting, and more. The volunteers provided more resources to support other students who cannot go back to their classrooms. By building relationships with the others, we are making a positive impact on their lives during this very challenging time and likely sparking a change that they will remember forever.

SAVE A LIFE7th Event: 5,000+ Masks for Healthcare Professionals

The COVID-19 became a threat to the world, including the United States in March 2020. Many pleas from our hospitals and rescue squads show that the alarming condition of shortage in personal protective equipment, esp. masks while they are thriving to provide medical service and respond to emergency calls within our community.

Save a Life started a 48 hour flash fundraiser. Thanks to the support of the International Leadership Foundation and everyone, GPA donated 5,000+ of N95 comparable face masks to NJ, NY, PA hospitals, including Princeton Medical Center, Princeton First Aid & Rescue Squad, Plainsboro Rescue Squad, Montgomery EMS, Hackensack Meridian Health, Englewood Hospital, Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, ARTIS Senior Living, Buckingham & Merwick Care and Rehabilitation Centers, Bridgeway Senior Healthcare, JFK Medical Center, Jersey City Medical Center, NYU, Cornell, Columbia Universities for their medical schools, and Mercy Medical Center in Long Island.

GPA Save A Life appreciates the glorious sacrifice and wants to be of help. We donated 5,000+ PPE (N95 & surgical masks, goggles, gloves, hand sanitizers, disinfective wipes, and Isolation ICU gowns) to support those emergency responding heroes.

“Thank AYLUS for your additional gift of 90 Isolation ICU gowns to our hospital, during this unprecedented global health crisis. You have helped to provide our employees with the provisions, protective wear, and medical supplies. By investing in our hospital, you have invested in the lives of our patients and the future of your community. As quickly as this national emergency has touched our local community, you were there immediately. You reached out, asked how you could help and without hesitation made an impactful donation to our hospital to help our/your community in this time of great need. Every person has the power to improve and enhance health and wellbeing of one’s community. Thank you for your commitment to your community, for believing in our work, and for changing the lives of those in our care!” — Tara F. SAVE A LIFE12th Event: AYLUS 2nd Art Exhibition “Light of Spirit”

To support healthcare heroes, GPA students created 20 artworks and hosted the 2nd Save a Life Art Exhibition “Light of Spirit” at Princeton Medical Center for 2 months starting May 14, 2020.

As shown below, one of the displayed paintings created by Cassie Tammy Wang, ‘Connection’, received a National Gold Medal of the 2021 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, it also won the First Place of the U.S. Congressional Art Competition. U.S. congressional representative Bonnie Watson Coleman gladly sent it to Washington D.C. for display in the Cannon Tunnel of U.S. Capitol Building for a year (Mark N. Strand – President of Congressional Institute introducing the art exhibition). Also included are congratulation letters from U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and U.S. House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy.

Further, Cassie Wang donated her paintings to the Princeton Medical Center Foundation for permanent display there starting July 2020 (Light of the Spirit). GPA members also collected 10+ gently used iPads for ICU, so patients could stay connected with their families during this tough time!

“We were delighted to receive the AYLUS Save A Life Art Exhibition displayed at Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center. The pieces of art created by the talented members of AYLUS uplifted the spirits of Princeton Health staff members throughout the COVID-19 outbreak. The outpouring of support we have received from our community during these unprecedented time in our world has been nothing short of overwhelming. As our hospital continues to meet the challenges of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the encouragement we continue to receive from organizations such as AYLUS is deeply appreciated. Thank you again for making a difference during this time of need.” — Hyona Revere, Senior Vice President, Development, Princeton Medical Center Foundation.

SAVE A LIFE13th Event: 3,000+ PPE for Princeton University Campus Safety

The donated items included N95 & surgical masks, gloves, face shields, ear savers, goggles, hand soaps, disinfectant wipes and spray.

“Thank you very much for your incredible generosity during a challenging time. The Mercer County Park Commission planted 1,200 trees and shrubs at Rosedale Park near Princeton in September, followed by planting hundreds of trees at the Spring Lake in October, and Dam Site 21 in November. SAVE A LIFE23rd Event: 2020 Veteran’s Day Concert, Serve Those Who Served!

Because of COVID-19, many veterans and their family suffered a tremendous loss of their beloved ones. In this hard time, we encourage GPA members to show their talents and record performance to make a concert video for the upcoming Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2020. We Serve Those Who Served! We shared this concert video with over 160 Veteran’s Memorial Homes in the United States.

“We will certainly include a showing of this concert at the Armed Forces Retirement Home on Wednesday as part of our Veteran’s Day programming. Thank you very much for sharing it with us, and many thanks to the talented young musicians featured in this concert.” — Marine Robbins, Volunteer Coordinator, Armed Forces Retirement Home, Washington, DC.

Your music and talents are truly appreciated and we are grateful for your kindness and efforts to support the veterans community.” — Keith L Jackson, Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret), Commissioner, Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs, Frankfort, KY.

SAVE A LIFE24th Event: 2020 Winter Clothing Drive, Keep Everyone Warm!

No one should go cold this winter! The health effects of extreme cold are life threatening. The unprecedented crisis created by the Covid-19 pandemic is affecting the lives of millions of people. Families who were already struggling are now at severe risk, and many cannot pay their utility bills. The need for coats this fall and winter will be greater than ever before!

Approximately 200,000 people die each year from the cold. Children cannot regulate their body temperatures as adults do. They can quickly develop hypothermia without protection from the cold. Cold weather makes the body work harder, putting stress on the heart to ensure the body stays warm. A 2015 study found up to a 31% increase in heart attacks in the coldest months of the year compared with the warmest. Exposure to cold predisposes people, especially children, to infections like pneumonia.

In Nov. 2020, GPA started our annual Winter Clothing Drive and called other branches to make it a national event. Our mission was to provide free/low cost clothing to people with needs. Over 12 branches across the country took part in this clothing drive by promoting donations of winter clothes in their communities, which went to designated locations by the end of 2020.

SAVE A LIFE25th Event: Supporting United Nations for COVID-19 Relief Fund

The world has never faced a crisis like COVID-19. The pandemic is affecting communities everywhere. It’s never been more urgent to support the global response, led by the United Nations World Health Organization (UN and WHO). In November 2020, GPA donated $400 to support the UN Foundation’s COVID-19 Relief Fund. We made a difference!

SAVE A LIFE26th Event: Holiday Performance for Healthcare Professionals

2020 is to take the title of the worst year in modern history from the COVID-19 outbreak to many disasters around the world. As the Holiday Season finally arrives, to thank all COVID-19 front-line workers across the country including doctors, nurses, emergency medical service, firefighters, rescue squads, and everyone for saving lives this year, GPA wanted to send them a special gift.

SAVE A LIFE27th Event: First “Treasuring the Trash” Recycled Art Show

During the 2020 holiday season, GPA hosted a Recycled Art Show, with the theme of ‘Treasuring the Trash’. We accepted photos and videos of artworks (painting, drawing, sculpture, craft, etc.) made of recycled materials, such as Cereal Boxes, Corks, Milk Cartons and Plastic Bottles, Catalogs, Magazines, Newspaper, Toilet Paper and Paper Towel Rolls, Jars, Lids, and Cans, Egg Cartons, and Plastic bags and films!

SAVE A LIFE28th Event: Environmental Conservationist Campaign

We started the Environmental Conservationist campaign in spring 2019 by encouraging members to adopt a park/trail, to recycle plastic bags/films and batteries, and so forth. GPA Founder & AYLUS President Cassie Wang spoke in front of the West Windsor Township Council to weigh in the legislative acts. We share this environmental conservationist concept with friends and families.

In May 2022, one of the most advanced paper and plastic bag bans in the United States has gone into effect in New Jersey. Grocery stores and retailers can no longer distribute plastic bags regardless of thickness and paper bags are not allowed in grocery stores that are larger than 2,500 square feet. New Jersey is the first state to outlaw paper bags, although some non-grocery retailers can still distribute paper bags. The law also bans polystyrene foam packaging from restaurants and food distributors and adds to a law that went into effect in November 2021 that makes plastic straws available only on request. The plastic and paper bag legislation was signed in November 2020. The bill prohibits municipalities and counties from adopting any ordinances governing plastic and paper bags, polystyrene and straws, and any ordinances already in effect will be replaced according to the various products’ phase out schedules.

SAVE A LIFE29th Event: 2020 Holiday Gifts for Seniors in Our Community

As 2020 ends, a second wave of COVID-19 has arrived, resulting in increased social distancing and dependence on the internet, both of which have disproportionately affected senior centers. Senior centers have tightened restrictions on visitors to avoid transmission; with the difficulty in setting up calls and the lack of in-person interactions, our seniors are feeling the brunt of this new social isolation. From December 2nd to December 20th, AYLUS members came together to ease this issue. They donated face masks, hand sanitizer, soap, and more PPE. They also donated snacks like chips and fruit bowls. Many wrote holiday cards to wish the seniors happy holidays, to bring the warmth of human interaction during this holiday season to them in the best way possible. Although COVID-19 has distanced us all, we can find alternative methods to stay connected. We may not wish them a cheerful holiday season in person, but we should always do the best we can to help others through hard times. AYLUS hopes that this “Holidays to Seniors” initiative will make the holiday season in senior centers a lot more cheerful!

In February 2021, with the U.S. approaching a devastating 500,000 Covid-19 deaths, AYLUS was to mark the moment. We expected American to continue to follow public health measures and get vaccinated when it’s their turn. In August 2021, another surge with ~70,000 cases per day because of Delta, the COVID-19 variant. GPA members quickly acted to create additional posters to urge American to get vaccinated for the Herd Immunization in all states as soon as possible.

SAVE A LIFE41st Event: Abbott Marshlands Spring Clean-Up for Conservation

March 22, 2021 is Water day. GPA encouraged members to join other volunteers on Saturday, March 27th, for a Spring Clean-Up in Roebling Memorial Park in the Abbott Marshlands (500 Sewell Ave., Hamilton, NJ 08610). The Abbott Marshlands are a unique freshwater tidal marshlands system which is unfortunately often a recipient of trash–both from the tides that bring in debris from the River and inland trash from the streets and storm drains. So come out to help make our community healthier, ecosystem stronger and our water cleaner!

“I would like to thank you for your wonderful work on Saturday as part of our Abbott Marshlands Spring Cleanup. We could collect 50 bags of trash from the Marsh along with some miscellaneous tires and even a propane tank. SAVE A LIFE43rd Event: STOP ASIAN HATE

According to NBC News, March 2021, new data has revealed over the past year, the number of anti-Asian hate incidents — which can include shunning, slurs and physical attacks — is greater than previously reported. Nearly 3,800 incidents reported over the course of roughly a year during the pandemic. GPA encouraged all AYLUS branches to take part in the STOP ASIAN HATE movement across the country. On March 27th, 2021, GPA members attended a rally event in front of the Princeton Public Library together with ~3,000 people from all across the New Jersey to Stop Asian Hate!

“Discrimination against Asians has always existed, but recently, because of the Asian Community being blamed for the COVID-19 pandemic, hate crimes against the Asian American Pacific Islander Community have increased. This affects the lives of Asian Americans as they are becoming afraid for their family members, friends, relatives, and themselves, taking away the security of the Asian American Pacific Islander community. The speeches made at the rally have helped raise awareness of our community’s treatment as people are being hurt because of their race and color. We will continue to fight our way through the mistreatment and stand in solidarity with the victims of the Asian hate crimes.” — GPA member Sarah Liu

SAVE A LIFE54th Event: Celebrating Independence Day with Community

The 2021 Independence Day will be one of the most special holidays in US history. The pandemic has resulted in important global social and economic disruption, including the largest global recession since the Great Depression. It has led to widespread supply shortages exacerbated by panic buying, agricultural disruption, and food shortages. Many educational institutions and public areas have been partially or fully closed, and many events cancelled or postponed. Misinformation has circulated through social media and mass media. The pandemic has raised issues of racial and geographic discrimination, health equity, and the balance between public health imperatives and individual rights.

With more people getting fully vaccinated, however, GPA is now seeing a bright future for the rest of 2021. We collected performance videos from our talent members and put together a virtual performance to celebrate a special 2021 Independence Day. We wanted to honor those working hard to help defeat the pandemic since 2020, including but not limited to the front line healthcare doctors and nurses, pharmaceutical scientists who make reliable vaccines, public service officers, first aid and rescue squad, volunteer firefighters, and indeed everyone who wears a mask and keeps a social distance to care for others. We visited the Princeton Battle Field to honor those sacrificed for our freedom.
