AYLUS Syosset Members go plant for Long Island Native Initiative on 7/13/24

On July 13, 2024, the Syosset AYLUS organization visited the Long Island Native Initiative to plant native plants. This initiative aims to maintain biodiversity on Long Island and support the growth of native plants to prevent invasive species from taking over. Many members of our organization and parents joined us at the greenhouse to participate in planting native plants.

Native plants play crucial roles in supporting local wildlife and enhancing ecosystem resilience. They are particularly important for supporting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. One of the plants we planted was Blue Curls, which are excellent pollinator plants. They attract various bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects, providing essential food sources and contributing to local biodiversity. Once established, Blue Curls require minimal care compared to non-native plants, as they are well-adapted to local conditions.

Another significant plant we planted at the Long Island Native Initiative was the Swamp Rose Mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos). This plant is crucial for the environment because planting Swamp Rose Mallow helps gardeners and conservationists restore and preserve native ecosystems. This action promotes the health and diversity of wetland habitats.

In conclusion, our planting efforts at the Long Island Native Initiative were very successful, thanks to the participation of our members and parents.
