On November 5th of 2023, the Roslyn AYLUS branch helps out at the school of CCA- The Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m.
The volunteers helped out as teachers assistants (TAs), keeping the assigned classrooms productive and on task. We assisted teachers in tutoring kids that asked for help by rereadingor repeating the questions to them on their tests and help keep the classroom organized. We also helped bring students to the bathroom and took care of them. Some students may have been homesick or didn’t want to be in school, so we comforted them by taking extra care of them and made sure they felt better. We remained patient to the kids as they felt better about being in school.
Not only did we help the kids learn better and be more engaged in the classroom, we also helped enforce the rules of the school. When we saw kids running in the hallways we would stop them or tell them to be slower. At snack time when the students of each classrooms go out to buy snacks we would help the people at the snack stand to give what the students wanted and collect coupons from them. After snack time, we would make sure the students returned to their classrooms.
Today there was a poem recital contest, so at 4:35 p.m. we brought the students that were going to compete in the poem recital contest. We also stayed there to look after them. The students recited different types and styles of poems either from memory or reading it on a piece of paper. One example of the poems is “Mooncake”. The students competed in different age groups and were judged by three special guests, one of which was the ex vice president of CCALI. After the students competed, we brought them back to their classrooms and get picked up by their parents.
