On August 12th, the AYLUS Pearland branch introduced free community art lessons held at the West Pearland Library from 4:00-5:30pm. Continuing to o act upon the increasing interest in art, volunteers provided interactive yet educational classes for creative individuals of all ages.
At the start of the class, the teachers and teaching assistants introduced their plan for the day; today the plan was to color the line art students created during the previous lesson. The students were guided through an analysis of how to approach coloring the reference (a Winnie the Pooh scene). Students started by coloring Winnie the Pooh, and moved on gradually to the surrounding characters and props, and finally to the background.
Volunteers found that these classes promoted skill development and individualism: from kids who always enjoyed art and coloring to ones who have created art at this level before. These classes also facilitated social interaction, as the students liked to discuss ideas and compare their drawings with friends. Additionally, this was a great way to provide an hour and a half of relaxation; allowing them to freely explore a hobby.
After the class ended, the kids eventually enjoyed snacks and discussed what they hoped the next project would be.
