On July 28th, members of the Pearland AYLUS volunteered at the SMILE program held by the Light and Salt Association. In the first class, August led a warm-up routine performed by monks that helped the students calm themselves and prepare for the day. He then lead the students in the Micheal Jackson line dance. Since the students already knew how the dance worked previously, they were quick to remember how to dance it.
Afterward, the students were taught how to create a wonderful piece of art using paint. The goal was to design a flower presented to them. With the help of the volunteers, the students were able to replicate the drawing.
Next, Alex taught the students how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. He started by giving them a test and then using the results to teach what needed to be taught. Volunteers were able to help the students succeed in some areas and at the very end, most students were able to solve a difficult grocery-oriented math problem.
Finally, the students played board games together. They were split into two groups and each group was supervised by Taylor. One group learned and played Monopoly while the other learned and played UNO. The students were able to catch on quickly and this helped them prepare for board game night on the Tuesday of next week.
